Ngai Tahu pūrakau recognise Hineroriki as the Atua her holds reigns over the strong northern winds.
One version of this pūrakau tells the story of Maui racing against his brothers to compete for the marriage of Hine-Te-Ngahere and Hine-Te-Repo.
The brother who reaches the far eastern sand bank and brings back a handful of white sand first will marry Hine -Te-Ngahere and the first brother to get to the far western sandbank and retrieve a portion of red sand will marry Hine-Te-Repo.
Maui tricked 3 of 4 of his aunties- the first being Hineroriki, wind deity of the North. He captured her ohonga or essence as she protested to aid him in cheating. Against her wishes, he held fast to ohonga and could now manipulate and control the strong northern gales at his will.
As a result of gaining control over three of the four winds, Maui won the race against his brothers. He retrieved sand from both ends of the sandbanks first, and married both Hine-Te-moana and Hine-Te-Repo.
