"Te Haumaru o ngā Atua" tells a story of divine protection and redemption of ones actions. According to my oral history the story of Māui attaining fire had been attributed to the protection of Māui from the scorching anger of his kuia Mahuika by 2 atua Māori, Tāwhirimatea & Rūaumoko.

To escape, being burnt from the sky in pursuit of Mahuika, he desperately asked the atua for help, both Tāwhirimatea and Rūaumoko agreed to help him. While surrounded by fire Tāwhirimatea opened up the heavens with rain, puting out the maelstrom of fire ready to engulf Māui, almost out of power, Mahuika threw her last flaming toenail at Māui & at that moment, Rūaumoko opened up the earth for Māui to fall in. The fatal cast missing Māui and implanting into the Tōtara, Māhoe & Pukatea trees.

From these rākau Māui rekindled the ahi of his kuia, taking fire back to his people to once again cook their kai, light and warm up their pā.

This print tells the story of protection and survival from the help of the atua, despite his mischievous actions and deciept, they helped Māui regardless, not just to help him but to help his people too. This story always held a deeper meaning to me, It's never too late to change and learn from your mistakes, as long as your actions are for the greater good, the atua will shelter you and help you get there. Te haumaru o ngā Atua.
