The symbology of a Manaia in Māori culture generally represents protection. Growing up, I believed the Manaia was like a taniwha, a guardian or spirit that dances between the realms of land, sky and sea. I feel it was fitting to feature Te Hoata and Te Pupu in this collection as Manaia as they were responsible for delivering geothermal activity to Ngatoroirangi, ensuring his survival.
